Lots of Things You Didn’t Know About BMW Flagship

With the release of the all-new sixth generation of the company’s top luxury vehicle, the BMW 7-Series, you might expect it’s had a lot of history over the years. Most of it was very good, but there were a few misses along the way. BMW almost released a V-16 version of the flagship sedan in the 1980s, but they couldn’t quite get the crankshaft to operate properly. The only production 16-cylinder vehicle alive today is the uber-expensive Bugatti Veyron, which produces 1,000 horsepower if you can make it to the next gas station. BMW has also been working on hydrogen power since the 1970s as a way to power an internal combustion engine. They actually built a fleet of 7-Series hydrogen cars in 2006, but have since decided to scrap that technology in favor of hydrogen fuel cells that power an electric motor.

745i First Full-Size Performance Model

BMW tested the South African market with the 745i, a full-size sedan capable of going 150 miles per hour. Using the M6’s 3.4-liter straight six cylinder engine, the 745i redlined at 7,000 rpm. Although the car was mildly popular, BMW chose not to pursue this angle. Look for a turbocharged diesel model in the coming years in the showroom of Chapman BMW on Camelback.

7-Series was Test Ground for BMW Turbocharging

Although many BMW models feature turbocharged engines now, it was the 7-Series that was the guinea pig for this engineering in the early 1970s. The biggest problem they had to overcome was turbo lag. Drivers would step on the accelerator and wait for a full second or more until the automatic stepped down and the power kicked in. The wait was worth it as driver felt their spines sink back into the seat, but it was kind of like the calm before the storm. Thankfully the new turbocharged engines have no such lag.

BMW M4 First for United States

As BMW continues to prepare for the unveiling of its new BMW M4 Coupe in about a year, the company is showing off a special production vehicle that is the first to be sold in the United States. The BMW Concept M4 GTS was revealed at the Monterey Car Week in California last month, continuing a tradition of special BMW M3 models that are at home on the road or a closed race track. The use of race-proven technology, more power and a lightweight design are all included in the M4 concept, as is a commitment to a limited production run. Technology in the concept car will be used in the upcoming M4, which you can see next year at Chapman BMW on Camelback.

Every Piece of M4 Concept Has a Purpose

From BMW’s commitment to providing a design that evokes an emotional reaction in drivers to the adjustable rear wing and front splitter, a lot of thought went into every component of the M4 GTS. More committed to weight loss than a dieter on New Year’s Day, the engineers at BMW created a hood made out of carbon reinforced plastic. This also lowers the center of gravity for the vehicle, which benefits from downward air drafts through the wide front air vent. Frozen Dark Grey metallic paint accented with Acid Orange is another emotional ploy that tells everyone around this is a car that means business. “While the BMW M4 Coupe embodies the ideal combination of motor sport genes and unrestricted everyday usability, the BMW Concept M4 GTS previews an emotionally powerful and exclusive special model conceived with an eye for trailblazing technology and a keen focus on the race track,” said Frank van Meel, chairman of BMW’s sport M development team.

Water Injection System Boosts Power

By utilizing a special water injection system that controls the engine temperature and allows for the turbocharger to use higher boost pressure, the M4 GTS achieves an increase in torque while reducing thermal stress. This not only increases power, but also provides enhanced stability and durability to the engine. In addition to the water injection system, the concept car also utilizes multiple radiators for the low and high temperature circuits, turbo and transmission to make sure all systems remain within optimal operating temperatures.

Organic LED Rear Lights Provide Precision

OLED lighting is a new technology that enables engineers to produce homogenous illumination at a precise point. With a height of just 1.4 millimeters, the lights contribute to the aerodynamic precision of the vehicle, adding just a bit more performance.
